Tesla and Elon Musk have announced the brand new Roadster 3.0 package, which applies what the brand has learned with the Model S to their original Roadster design. Mainly, they’ve identified a new cell that has 31% more energy than the original Roadster cell and have created a battery pack that delivers roughly 70kWh in the same package as the original. Also, the Roadster 3.0 is expected to make a 15-percent improvement in drag coefficient with a retrofit aero kit. New tires also add to the upgrade, offering a 20-percent improvement in rolling resistance coefficient. They are even making improvements in the wheel bearings and residual brake drag.
Combining all of these improvements, Tesla claims they can achieve a 40-50% improvement on range between the original Roadster and Roadster 3.0. With a set of speeds and driving conditions, the new and improved Roadster can “confidently drive for over 400 miles.” Tesla will be demonstrating this in the real world during a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of 2015.
